Stay calm and sleep

| On 30, Jan 2015

You check the time and try to find a more comfortable position. You hear every little sound while your brain goes into overdrive retrieving things past, things to do, and what did so-and-so mean when she said… Is insomnia a monster that wears you out, leaving you to shuffle zombie-like through the day?

Try the yoga pose savasana the next time sleep deserts you. I used to scramble to my feet at the end of yoga class because winding down with the savasana pose sent me to slumberland. I would wake to find the lights on and my fellow students rolling up their mats.

This happens because the practice of lying still as you listen to your instructor’s tranquil voice  helps prepare your brain for rest.

How to do it: Lie on your back with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms by your sides with the palms up. Close your eyes, and focus on your breath and your belly gently rising and falling as you inhale and exhale. Some people listen to soothing music (try the Rainbow Relaxation) but I prefer to concentrate on breathing as I relax every muscle.
