Patient’s Perspective – From Ballistic to Placid

| On 31, Jan 2015

A newfound friend asked, “Are you always this cheerful? You’re so patient with your kids. ” I had to answer sheepishly, “Ok, this means my medication is working. “

While I am no explosive road bully, I have had near hits, just thank God I don’t own a car. : ) BUT for the whole of 2013, I experienced

  • Sweaty palms
  • Feeling hot all the time
  • Frequent offloads of big business in the toilet (I didn’t know the meaning of constipation.)
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Bursts of anger
  • Loads of hair falling out
  • Super cranky fits at the hubby and kids

I was just zipping around like an Energizer bunny and then crashing after. I was hungry all the time, angry half the time. Soon, I was 9 kg more on the weighing scale, tummy bulging like a muffin over the top of my pants.  Most of the time, I felt hot and sweaty. Aha! Hot flushes?  Menopause!  Nope. Too young. Then what?

The verdict: Hyperthyroidism

Hey! Wait a minute, all my very informed readers holler, you’re supposed to lose weight and look emaciated if you have a hyperthyroid. Your hormones are in overdrive, your metabolism puts Usain Bolt’s to shame and it burns calories like a Ferrari burns fuel.

Ok, the exception to the rule. Being can’t- sit-still busy, zipping around and then eating to feed that ravenous hunger resulted in piling on the pounds.   Shucks, should have ignored those hunger pangs then I would have reached my goal of 45kg.

However, hyperthyroidism presents as follows (normally)

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

  • Fatigue or muscle weakness
  • Hand tremors
  • Mood swings
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Skin dryness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Weight loss
  • Increased frequency of bowel movements

So, have a simple thyroid check at the polyclinic if you’re being labelled, “Mrs 365 days PMS”
