At Ang Mo Kio right across from Bishan Park is a cosy eatery named after a Cuban cocktail. Here you can have pasta and cake as good as anything you’d get in fancy cafes in upmarket districts. The bonus is friendly service, reasonable prices, and the serenity of a quiet HDB neighbourhood.

It poured the afternoon my friends and I met for lunch, giving us reason to linger over dessert. If you don’t want to be rushed or need privacy for a tête-à-tête, head for Mojito at Blk 338, #01-1647 Ang Mo Kio Ave 1

We each had a pasta and shared a crispy crust pizza along with mushroom soup and a banana waffle. Along with drinks, it worked out to about $17 per person. The cakes looked divine but I’ll have to try those another time.

Mojito beefballs

Meat fans can try their Black Angus Beefballs ($9.90) which come with focaccia to mop up the sauce. Chocolate lovers must make room for the Mud Pie ($6.90) which is definitely enough for two or even three.
