Makeup that’s kind to your pocket!

Makeup that’s kind to your pocket!

By GOWRI KANAGARAJAH – Let’s face it – makeup is both a boon and a bane. It has the power to transform and enhance our features, but it can also come at very high prices! If the price tags at a Sephora store are anything to go by, makeup users need to constantly weigh quality vs quantity.

I have often been torn between the two, being a student who happens to love makeup and who treats it as a form of expression. If I’m feeling down? I do a simple cat eye to look awake – and feel awake! If I’m feeling adventurous, I wear a streak of vividly-coloured eyeshadow on both my lids and go about my day. But sometimes, you just don’t want to splurge on a high-end product that you might not like.

So if you’re in that situation, read on about some of my beauty favourites. All of them can be found at Watsons and Guardian stores as well as beauty and accessories store May Fashion. These are all products that I have used and am still using, so trust my word on them!

PRIMER:  A primer is used to blur out imperfections and smoothen out your skin’s surface, so you have an even complexion to apply foundation. This Catrice Prime & Fine Smoothing Refiner (available at Watsons) is a light-pink mousse that’s very easy to blend.

FOUNDATION: The Revlon Colorstay Foundation ($30.90 per bottle) range is one of the best drugstore foundations out there, and for good reason. It comes in both combination/oily and normal/dry skin formulas. It also has buildable coverage, which means that you can apply a thin layer of foundation at first, and then build on more layers, without looking cakey. I would recommend this for daily use as well as special occasions.
