Foodie – JB cafe-style dining

You think our nearest neighbour, Johor Baru, is all about seafood and Malaysian fare? Locals will tell you you’re missing out on some great little cafes which offer cosy ambience and yummy cake, coffee, chicken chops, toast, macarons etc at good Ringgit value. Johorean Chua Swee Xuan takes us to 6 of her favourite hangouts.
This themed restaurant is near the AEON Bukit Indah shopping centre. The cartoon theme is carried in the décor and surprisingly, extensive menu. Prices are between RM 10 and RM 30. Despite the cutesy bears and kawaii feel, the café is popular with all ages, so don’t miss out on enjoying a meal here.

The strangely named AnMour Café is doing so well, it’s in JB as well as Mount Austin and Sutera Utama, and recently, a new one opened in Taman Gaya. The distinguishing feature of this restaurant is the Mexican feel, but the food is best described as western. Menu prices are between RM 10 and RM 50. AnMour Café is open (weekdays) noon – 11 pm, (weekends) noon – midnight. For Sunday, 12.00pm – 11.00pm. As it’s always crowded on weekends, we always ring ahead to make a booking for lunch or dinner.

Mr Toast started as a stall in the Ho Peng Restaurant. It’s popular because besides a choice of 9 flavours, they produce fresh toast fast. Office workers order ahead so they can enjoy crisp, warm toast a-la-minute. If you crave toast for breakfast, head for Mr Toast and pay just RM3 – RM3.80. Open Mon-Sun: 6.30 am to 1 pm.
