If you get stranded on a desert island, you should hope it has coconut trees.
Associated more with camera-toting tourists in loud floral shirts, we might not be aware that coconut is a complete food because it has essential vitamins, minerals and electrolytes, and is used to treat gastrointestinal diseases and even cholera.
In parts of the world where coconut is a staple, coconut water is given to newborn babies whose mothers cannot breastfeed them. Native folk have always known that coconut water has properties that make it ideal food for babies.
When coconut water is available, opt for it over a sweetened beverage. Not only is it an excellent source of hydration but a super food. Everything from the coconut tree is of use, from the oil to the milk to the bark and inedible parts like leaves and trunk.
In traditional medicine, it is used to treat numerous ailments, ranging from sore throat, colds, tumours, and ulcers. Can’t ask for a better tasting medicine.
