Bloesem blossoms again

Edited by Ella Tan

It looked like the end of Bloesem, one of our go-to stores for cool furnishings for our boutique office. Like other fans, we were shocked with the news that the quirky store in Tiong Bahru was clearing out.

Just like its counterparts run by creative young entrepreneurs, e.g. Nana & Bird, these retail businesses have helped transform once sleepy Tiong Bahru into a lively hipster enclave.

Bloesem1At Bloesem, while we were picking up a few gorgeous paper lanterns handmade in Berlin, we managed to find out more from owner Ms Irene Hoofs.  Usually enthusiastic and full of spirit, Irene was looking noticeably downcast at the prospect of moving out.

“Having received warnings from police who were sent by the resident committee, we have no choice but to vacate the premises. What is unjust is that we were only given one month to vacate the place. It is a shame as we have made plans for upcoming classes through Etsy, the well-loved market place for hand-made items.”

While URA has announced that it is not their intention to diminish the vibrancy of the Tiong Bahru area and that businesses with proper authorisation are welcome to continue their operations, it’s a pity we won’t be able to pop into Bloesem when we’re in Tiong Bahru.

However, the good news is Bloesem has relocated to Nassim Road and had another pop-up sale last Friday. Looks like we will be heading down that way for more of Irene’s chic home décor ideas.
